The services of the Accident insurance

Accident insurance is compulsory for everyone in Switzerland. Both occupational and non-occupational accidents are covered. If you work eight hours or more per week, you are covered by your employer. In the case of part-time work and self-employment, you are covered by your health insurance.

Treatment

Medical treatment is paid for (hospital, medication, therapy, aids).

Daily allowance

A daily allowance is paid from the third day.
80% of the salary is insured.

Pension

A long-term pension is paid after the daily allowance.
90% of wages are covered.

Accident insurance: You should know that!

If you do not have accident insurance through your employer (UVG), your basic insurance (KVG) covers accidents. The benefits provided by basic insurance are basically the same as for illness. However, you pay part of the costs yourself: Annual deductible and then 10% excess

Do you know these facts about Accident insurance already?

The whole system of accident insurance can quickly become complicated. You don’t need to know everything, that’s what our experts are here for. Here are three facts to get you started:

Mandatory

Every employee is protected by the employer against non-occupational accidents, occupational accidents and occupational illnesses. If you work less than eight hours for the same employer, you must take out health insurance. You are insured either way.

Scope of services

In the long term, you are often much better covered with accident insurance than through illness. Accident insurance offers comprehensive benefits, including medical treatment, rehabilitation, daily allowances, disability pensions and survivors’ pensions.

Cost sharing

If the accident cover is covered by your health insurance, you pay part of the accident costs yourself. The deductible and excess of the basic insurance then apply to illness and accident together.

The most frequently asked questions & answers about Accident insurance.

In Switzerland, all employees are covered by compulsory accident insurance (UVG) against occupational and non-occupational accidents and occupational illnesses. People who work less than 8 hours per week for the same employer must include accident cover in their health insurance (KVG). Medical treatment, income replacement benefits, disability pensions and benefits for surviving dependants are always covered.

Accident insurance in Switzerland offers comprehensive cover for accidents and occupational illnesses. Costs for medical treatment, medication and hospitalization are covered. If you are unable to work, you are covered by a daily allowance (80% of your salary). After that, you receive a long-term disability pension (with other statutory benefits, this amounts to 90% of your salary). Financially, you often receive considerably less in the event of illness. There are also survivors’ pensions in the event of death. Furthermore, the insurance supports professional reintegration with integration measures and covers the costs of necessary aids such as wheelchairs.

Accident insurance through the employer generally offers better cover than compulsory health insurance. It not only covers medical costs following an accident, but also provides financial support in the form of daily allowances and pensions (including for surviving dependants). In contrast to health insurance, where you have to pay a share of the costs, accident insurance covers the costs in full.

Accident insurance begins on the first day of employment or as soon as you start your journey to work. The insurance cover ends 31 days after the last day of work. This arrangement provides a bridging period after termination of employment.

After termination of employment in Switzerland, accident insurance cover is provided by the employer for a further 31 days. In order to continue cover in the event of non-occupational accidents, an interim insurance policy can be taken out within this period, which is valid for up to six months. If no interim insurance is taken out, the accident insurance must be included in the health insurance.

Accident insurance by agreement under the Accident Insurance Act (UVG) is a special form of insurance in Switzerland that offers people the opportunity to voluntarily extend their protection against non-occupational accidents if they lose their job or go on unpaid leave. By taking out interim insurance, insurance cover for accidents can be maintained worldwide for a period of up to six months. The employer can easily take out interim insurance via the accident insurance.
