The most frequently asked questions & answers about Household contents insurance.

In Switzerland, no distinction is often made between household contents insurance and household insurance; both terms basically describe the same insurance product. They cover damage to or loss of personal items in the home – such as furniture, electronics, clothing – against risks such as fire, theft, water and others. Sometimes “household insurance” refers to a package that includes personal liability insurance in addition to household contents insurance to cover both household contents and everyday liability risks.

If you are underinsured, this means that the sum insured under your policy is lower than the actual value of your household contents or property.

In the event of a claim, the insurance company will not pay the full cost of the damage, but only a proportion that corresponds to the ratio of the sum insured to the actual value. This can mean that you have to bear a considerable part of the costs yourself.

It is therefore important to regularly check whether your sum insured still corresponds to the current value of your possessions, especially after major purchases.

Adult children are often covered by their parents’ household contents and personal liability insurance up to the age of 25, as long as they are not gainfully employed.

For students, this co-insurance may apply regardless of their age or whether they have a secondary occupation. In the household contents area, there are generally no age or employment restrictions for the co-insurance of the child’s personal belongings as long as they are included in the scope of cover of the parents’ policy.

The exact conditions can be found in the GCI of the parents’ policy; if you have any questions, your insurance advisor will be happy to help.

If you move in together and previously had two separate household contents insurance policies, you can cancel one of them. The great thing is that many insurers are accommodating and will waive the notice period in this case.

Your household contents often change when you move in together. Perhaps you give up some furniture, but move in more electronic devices or a new sofa. It is therefore important that you carefully check and adjust the sum insured of your remaining household contents insurance.

This should accurately reflect the total value of your household contents in order to avoid overpayments or reductions in the event of a claim.

Also remember to adjust the policy, as it now has to cover a household with several people.

As a policyholder, you are bound by certain deadlines if you wish to cancel your insurance policy. As a rule, you must cancel no later than three months before the end of the current insurance period. If you do not cancel in good time, your contract will automatically be extended for another year. If you are planning to switch to another company, make sure that the new insurance policy is seamlessly connected to the old one so that you are not left without cover in the meantime.
